Susie King Taylor (1848-1912)

WBP is developing a graphic novel on the experiences of Susie King Taylor’s life before, during, and after the Civil War.  Susie King Taylor was born a slave, but escaped bondage and joined the Union Army as a Laundress. Writing her memoirs several years after her experiences in the Civil War resulted in the publication of “Reminiscences of My Life in Camp with the 33rd United States Colored Troops.” This is a timeless story that still resonates in today’s world and shows the grit and determination of those committed to making a better way of life for themselves and their fellow Americans. King Taylor’s experiences include those of a teacher, a nurse, laundress, and numerous other roles that emerged during this time.
