WBP Mission and Plan

Our Mission

A Commitment to History

A Commitment to History

The mission of Wood Block Press is to inspire love of literacy and a sense of identity, purpose, and potential in readers. We believe that history and the numerous actors across each story can play a foundational role in understanding oneself and the potential that exists in each of  us. We intend to spark the imagination by presenting inspiring stories through graphic narratives.

Wood Block focuses in biographical accounts with an emphasis on minorities and women’s experiences. Our process involves historiographical research, collaboration with professional historians, and the use of historical records collections and other artifacts. Through our publishing design, we present the reader with ongoing access to historical records expanding the scope of the reading experience.

Our Values

The focus of our publications are structured with the reader in mind, but with a purposeful and robust compatibility to the needs of history and civics in schools.

Our Values

It is often through the collective stories we have that inspiration lies in wait for each of us. To work and develop ones self to be more as individuals. There is academic value in learning history, but far greater civic and social value from learning the stories and experiences of others.

The concept of 'fictive kinship' is an  important component for civilized and productive relationships across society. These give us the capacity to care about others. The stories and accounts we will offer the reader are not our own, but those who have come before us or who are/were working and often struggling quietly with the rest.

We Believe This Is Important

We all have different backgrounds and experiences that make us uniquely skilled across innumerable, but often untapped areas of life. It is often through the collective stories or experiences we have that can inspire each of us to work to be more and to develop ourselves as individuals. There is academic value in learning history, but there is far greater civic and social value that comes from learning about the stories and experiences of others. Whether these stories remind us of ourselves or are unfamiliar, there is much to be gained in perspective for the listener or the reader. The concept of 'fictive kinship' is an important and necessary component for civilized and productive relationships across society. The stories and accounts we will offer the reader are not our own, but those who have come before us or who are/were working and often struggling quietly with the rest.
