Developing the framework and outcomes for Wood Block Press has been in development for some for more than 2 1/2 years. Researching and understanding the nature of the requirements to carry out this mission has been resulted in the development of a solid business plan and strategic vision. To execute this organizational mission, WBP needs the support to recruit and retain skilled individuals that will hard to achieve tangible outcomes. While we are well-positioned for access and collaboration with expertise, we are seeking the financial means provided by resources or sponsorship.
Graphic Novels Series
K-12 Readers and Education
Graphic novels and comic literature have a fixed set of costs and this is easily broken down across the number of issues annually. Private philanthropists and other sponsors may sponsor the costs associated with a particular title(s) or a series. Our goal is to help the kids.
WBP maintains an ongoing agenda of grant identification, writing, and submission across the calendar year. We develop grants for different aspects of organizational operations to meet our broader mission.
Crowdfunding strategies are common with graphic publications. Kickstarter supports such campaigns and WBP will pursue this opportunity on a project-by-project basis, as appropriate. Kickstarter dos not support multiple publication campaigns simultaneously, so we will be pragmatic with this platform.
Students are the essential readership and we believe they can contribute, too. We seek to work with the fine/graphic arts faculty and students in various school settings as the primary developers and illustrators. Working in an entrepreneurial fashion with schools and school districts, WBP devises strategies whereby classes and students may produce and contribute to a particular graphic narrative. With this partnership, the school is recognized as the primary artist(s), thus bringing acclaim to the talent of their faculty and students. Additionally, the partnership benefits the school monetarily, and through the applied experiences of graphic arts to the students.
The nature of the graphic arts industry is often decentralized. This is an advantage in keeping costs reasonable, but also gives us the flexibility to work with the creative energy and talent of younger artists. We embrace the different experiences that make someone compatible with a WBP project.
Wood Block Press publications will be based in historical research and/or other vetted sources so that accurate, useful, and engaging information is a consistent feature across all issues.
The educational standards that guide instruction for teachers are multilayered and come from a variety of different organizational resources. Since there is not a single set of educational standards that guide all history or other instruction, WBP will reference the appropriate educational standard frameworks (see sample of Educational Standards listed below) in identifying and demonstrating the instructional connection to the content of the publication. This will be identified in a manner that is supportive of teacher instruction, but not to the point of constituting a textbook. The format for this information will be seamlessly integrated into the reading materials.
WBP will utilize a broad approach to aligning standards in this area so teachers are the ones handling the finer details of their instructional goals and planning as they may relate to these titles. WBP is there to support the process through appropriate connections to standards. a
WBP is committed to collaborating with curriculum and developmental specialists to ensure that historical content is supporting learning in schools. Our publications will follow particular themes and/or historical strands, so a system of identification is embedded across the publication for ease in familiarity and use. A solid framework will be established between the content presented and the academic discipline in which it is written, thus presenting the teacher with a resource for focused facilitation of student learning.
The bodies of educational standards will generally be drawn from the following sources as they are utilized by K-12 settings, but WBP will modify this list or the standards utilized as is relevant.
We are committed to the effective use of data analytics and review in the further development of engaging and effective content. A system will be embedded within and across publications so that a consistent level of review and support is always possible and in place. This system will be comprised of preselected print-points for QRC or other relevant scanning codes that enable the reader or user of a smart device that has scanned the title just read to instantly connect to different types of web-based resources. The presence of this service further enhances the impact of the multimodal nature of the subject just read.
In the feedback phase, these embedded codes will serve the purpose of reader feedback on story elements that address the content, form, focus, etc. This is a standardized process of review that helps to ensure a continuous level of interesting content and reader engagement. Following the revision and distribution of the publication, these links of these codes are converted to serve the instructional needs of the teacher and learning needs of the students on the other end of publication and release of the volume or title. At that point, they become additional content portals that smart phone or pad technology are capable of interfacing with.
Process of Student Review
Prior to the distribution of publications from Wood Block Press, a system for student review will be built into the process of review. Through partnerships established with schools and in talking with the real students who read the works, WBP will share graphic content with the readers in age groups we serve and solicit feedback for improvement. This process is to ensure that this organization’s publications remain relevant in the ways they are intended and it has accurate data to make informed organizational and/or content decisions. This applies not only to the subjects published but also the themes explored.
Assessment Components of Reading Process
The practical utility in schools today lies in the strength of their plans of assessment. The teachers who provide these titles to their students are naturally concerned with the assessment. In working with teachers to provide content of value for young readers, a framework of integrated assessment support exist alongside these titles. While teachers may not always utilize the assessment function of these graphic novels/comic titles, the presence of that option will make for a wider and more considered array of professional choices.
The following steps describe the general process for the creation of Wood Block Press graphic novels and literature. There are naturally changes and modifications required in each unique situation, but the sequence describes the general order of operations.
